Sample review. The rod, the brand and the scores are fictional. This page shows how a Fishing Gear review will read.

We fished this rod from a poling skiff and from the bank, with paddle-tail soft plastics, topwater walkers and a popping cork. The review puts the verdict up front, then the detail, the same way a guide would tell it at the dock.

How we tested

Three anglers fished the rod over six weeks on three bays, in calm mornings and windy afternoons, and scored it on the same five measures we use for every inshore rod.

Verdict

A strong all-round inshore rod for anglers who fish soft plastics most of the day. The specs and scores on this page are sample values.

What we liked

  • Light enough to cast all morning
  • Tip picks up soft bites on a falling tide
  • Enough backbone to turn a slot red away from the mangroves

What could be better

  • Split-grip handle is short for two-hand casts
  • Reel seat is the cheapest part of the build
